Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k choose St Catherine’s Hospice
Once again St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k taking place on Sunday 30 September 2018The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee was unanimous in their decision to continue to support the outstanding local charity which provides individualised, expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey.
Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “Those of us who have visited St Catherine’s Hospice know what a wonderful place it is with some very special people providing an essential service. This year our association with St Catherine’s is particularly poignant as we recently lost two dear friends from the village, Brian Muncer and Mike Awcock, who were very prominent figures in village life and who between them clocked up 56 years as senior marshals for our race. Both passed away just before Christmas and both benefitted enormously from St Catherine’s support. We are therefore delighted to be extending our association with this great charity for another year.”
The enormous success of last year’s Barns Green and 10k races combined with the great generosity of the runners resulted in a staggering £18,000 being raised for St Catherine’s.
Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice said: “We’re so grateful to the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k committee for choosing us as their charity partner again. We rely very heavily on support and donations from our local community and each year need to raise more than £6.5 million in voluntary income so support like this is vital.
Without it, we couldn’t deliver our expert care to local people when it's needed most. We’re looking forward to another year of great races!”
Last year over 2,200 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 36th year and almost 600 runners completed the 10k event which was only being staged for the second time.
This year’s two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital where for the first time in 4 years the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing while the runners go through the grounds of the school. What could be more uplifting for runners? Entries are already open for the September races, and hopefully the event will once again raise a lot of money for its chosen charity.
