Horsham Charity set to benefit from local marathon

This year’s Barns Green Half Marathon takes place on Sunday the 30th October.

At 11am on race day, hundreds of runners will begin the 13 mile race, streaming through Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater in what is one of the most scenic races in the country.  Once again numerous charities, local organisations and youth groups are set to benefit from the event and this year’s chosen charity is the Springboard Project.  The Springboard Project is based in Horsham and Crawley and provides safe, accessible, inclusive play and recreation facilities to young people with additional requirements or disabilities.

Founded in 1992, the Springboard Project is a community based play and leisure organisation for children and young people, positively including those with disabilities and additional needs. As well as play and stay at Springboard House in Horsham, where families with young children can enjoy the indoor and outdoor facilities together during the week, there is also a team of staff providing fun short break activities for children and young people with disabilities at weekends, in the evenings and during the school holidays. These activities are based in several locations, including Crawley, Sutton, Mid Sussex and Horsham. There are two age groups, the 5-12 year olds are Grasshoppers, and the 12-18 year olds group is Buddies. A full range of inclusive activities are offered, from picnics and play in the park to swimming and rock climbing, to trips out to Butlins or Buckingham Palace! Sessions are planned around the needs of the individual children attending, to ensure safety, new experiences and fun! In addition, the Springboard Project runs a Twins Club and BunnyHoppers, a monthly Sunday afternoon session for families with under 5s with a disability.

However, it is not just the Springboard Project that will benefit from the Barns Green Half Marathon. Each year hundreds of pounds are raised for different charities, local organisations and youth groups.  Last year, the race raised around £15,000 for charities, local organisations and youth groups. In addition many of the runners taking part in the race also raise money for various charities.  The local sports clubs receive donations for their help and support as do groups such as the local playgroup, Scouts and Guides.

Barns Green Half Marathon Chairman, Vernon Jennings commented, “We are delighted to have the Springboard Project as our official charity this year.  The work that they do is invaluable and we hope that everyone who takes part in this year’s race or comes along to cheer on the runners will support this wonderful local charity and the great work that they do”.
