Marathon money helps Church and Monday Club
This year’s Barns Green Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 30th October. The race is now in its 29th year and it gets bigger each year. It therefore requires a huge effort from a lot of people to enable the event to be staged and last year 104 volunteer helpers gave their time in the run up to and during the race to help it run smoothly. As a result the event raised a staggering £15,000 which was distributed to charities and various local organisations, sports and social clubs and youth groups in and around the village. In addition, the competitors raised an estimated £30,000 for various charities and good causes.
Barns Green Half Marathon Chairman, Vernon Jennings commented, “The Barns Green Half Marathon is all about the local community and we are extremely proud of the amounts of money that we are able to raise each year. It is wonderful that such a small village can stage such a big event and one of the highlights for me on raceday is to see the sheer joy and sense of achievement on the runners’ faces as they cross the finishing line and receive their medals”.
Last year over 1800 runners took part in the race which follows a route through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex.
In 2010 the race was won by the superb Kenyan athlete, 20 year old Edwin Kipyego who ran an astonishing race finishing in a time of 1 hour 4 minutes 28 seconds, almost 6 minutes ahead of the second placed athlete. Kipyego knocked 21 seconds off the course record which had stood for 24 years. However the race is not just for serious athletes. Runners of all ages and abilities take part in this great local event and make it one of the great annual spectacles in the village. There is even a prize for the best fancy dress runner.
However, the event is always keen to attract new runners of all standards and there is plenty of time for people to do some training and get themselves in shape to take part in an official and well organised road race.
